Door Preparation for Emtek Hardware

Emtek Locks are designed to fit into a standard American style tubular door preparation. If you are purchasing Emtek locks to replace existing locks, your door preparations will probably be suitable for Emtek locks already, without any extra work necessary. Before you place your order, you'll just need to get your backset measurement- the guides below are provided for your assistance.

If you'll be installing Emtek locks in new doors, please be aware that your door preparation needs will vary depending on exactly which piece of hardware you're selecting. For this reason, we recommend that you order your locks and allow the person doing your door preparation to work with the locks to assure that the holes are bored properly.

Backset

In the US, there are two standard backset measurements for residential locks: 2-3/8" and 2-3/4". The backset is the distance between the outer edge of the door and the center of the 2-1/8" bore hole.

Passage, Privacy, Key-in Knob or Lever, and Deadbolt locks fit into this door preparation. If starting with a new door, bore a 2-1/8" hole through the door. The center of this hole should be located 2-3/8" or 2-3/4" back from the edge of the door, to match the backset specification of your hardware.

Edge Bore Detail

Bore a 1" hole in the edge of the door located on the centerline of the 2-1/8" hole. The latch will fit into the 1" hole. Chisel out a 1" by 2-1/4" rectangle on the edge of the door, 1/8" deep. The faceplate of your latch will sit in this recession.

Keyed Locks With Sideplates

Two sets of holes are required, with a center-to-center distance of 3-5/8" between the two sets of holes.

Tubular Handlesets

Most Tubular Handlesets require a 5-1/2" center to center door preparation. Templates are included with hardware to ensure you'll know the proper measurements.

Dummy Sets

Dummy sets do not require any door preparation. They mount directly to the door surface in the place of your choosing, though standard practice is for the sets to be mounted to match operational doors that are nearby.
